How Can I Help?
Objectives:
- SWBAT consider ways that they can help someone who may not have a need and express that idea through a drawing and writing.
- VA Social Studies SOL: 2.10 The student will explain the responsibilities of a good citizen, with emphasis on
- NCSS: Learners will understand how people and communities deal with scarcity of resources.
- VA Visual Arts SOL: 2.9 The student will identify and use a variety of sources for art ideas, including nature, people, images, imagination, and resource materials.
Materials:
- Papers
- Pencils and crayons

Procedure:
1. Review from the previous lesson what are some things that the students could do to help someone that may not have a need(s). Students can share to the class their ideas.
2. Go on a field trip to a soup kitchen or a food pantry. If possible, organize for a staff member or volunteer to share information about the soup kitchen or food pantry.
3. After coming back to the class from the field trip, have a class discussion about the students' experience. What need does the soup kitchen or food pantry give?
4. Instruct students to draw a picture with a sentence about how they think they can help someone if they see someone who does not have a need. Remind the students about the interview they saw from the Reading Rainbow clip. (The boy shared one of the biggest things he would miss from being homeless and moving was missing his friends). This drawing can be used as a part of their final assessment.

Differentiation:
- During the class discussion, use voice changes to stress points
- Repeat important information often
- Teach key vocabulary before the lesson and attending the field trip
- Provide a written handout of the directions with highlights or underline under the significant parts of the directions
Assessment:
- Page of drawing with writing: Students will draw a picture and write a sentence or two about how they think they can help someone that may not have a need. Students will be rated on the neatness and appropriateness of their picture, and correct grammar and punctuation in their writing.
