Lesson 2
What are the Different Types of Needs?
Objectives:
- SWBAT create a short skit to express their knowledge about a type of need.
- NCSS: Learners will understand the difference between needs and wants
- VA English SOL: 2.1 The student will demonstrate an understanding of oral language structure. b) Create and participate in oral dramatic activities.
Materials:
- Poster boards and marker
- Any props that may be used for the skits
- Any props that may be used for the skits
Procedure
1. As a whole class, discuss what needs people may have. Make a list on the board.
2. Conclude the main needs that people have; air, food, water, and shelter. (You may want to add clothing).
3. Write each need as a heading on separate poster boards. Discuss why people have these needs and what they do. As students share, write their ideas on the posters.
4. Explain to the class that they are going to be separated into groups and create a short skit to the class to explain one of the types of needs. Assign students into groups.
5. Time will be given for students to organize and practice their skits. All students need to participate in their groups and all students need a speaking role in their presentation. Groups may decide if their skits will be persuasive, informative, comedic, or any genre that they would see best fit.
6. Skits will be performed.

- Use voice changes to stress points
- Repeat important information often
- Provide outline of lecture on a handout
- Teach key vocabulary before the activity
- Have student practice speaking to small group before presenting to large group
Assessment:
- Skit: Check that students express their knowledge about a type of need through their skit performance and that they participated in creating and performing the skit.
