Lesson 1
What are Wants and Needs?
Objectives:
- SWBAT classify different items that people may want or need.
- NCSS: Learners will understand the difference between needs and wants.
Materials:
- LCD projector, computer, and internet access
- Wants and Needs worksheets: (Wants and Needs chart.pdf)
- Wants and Needs picture cards: (Wants and Needs picture cards.pdf)
- Scissors and glue
- Poster with two headings written: "Needs" and "Wants"
- Pre-cut picture cards for the teacher

Procedure:
1. Introduce the video clip from the BrainPOP Jr. website: Learn about Needs and Wants. As the clip plays, pause the video to review with the class the difference between needs and wants.
2. After the clip is finished, ask from the class suggestions what some wants and needs may be.
3. Hand out worksheets and picture cards to every student. Instruct them to cut out pictures and glue them in the appropriate column in the worksheet.
4. Come back together as a class and review where the students placed the cards. During this time, the teacher can place the pre-cut picture cards onto the poster for the whole class to see as students share where they placed their own pictures. Have a discussion about the different reasons students chose to place cards in either the needs or wants column. The teacher can guide students to understand that although a doll or stuffed animal may make a child feel happier, they could survive without it.

- Wants and Needs Worksheet: Check that students appropriately sort and glue the picture cards under the right column of needs or wants on their worksheet.
